A Foot Injury That Changed My Life

Sometimes, life forces you to pause — and in that pause, everything can change. For me, it happened more than 15 years ago, in the form of a foot injury that kept me home for nearly a month. At first, it felt frustrating and limiting. But looking back, that period became the beginning of a journey I never anticipated — a journey into training, empowerment, and purpose.

When Life Slows You Down

The injury was sudden. One day I was active, working, and managing multiple responsibilities. The next, I was confined to my home, unable to move freely.

Initially, I struggled with restlessness and frustration. It felt like time was slipping away, and I couldn’t contribute in my usual ways.

But after a few days, I realized I had something rare: uninterrupted time. Time to think, reflect, read, and create. Time I didn’t usually allow myself in the daily rush of work.

Transforming Time Into Purpose

During that month, I began organizing all my knowledge, readings, and ideas. I converted them into a structured soft skills training course — starting with PowerPoint slides, exercises, and practical examples.

My goal was simple but meaningful: deliver this course to youth in underdeveloped areas through NGOs. I wanted to empower them with skills that could genuinely make a difference in their lives — skills they might not otherwise have access to.

I began reaching out to NGOs, scheduling sessions, and delivering my first workshops. The energy, curiosity, and gratitude of these young people were inspiring. Their engagement fueled my own growth and sense of purpose.

This was the moment I realized: passion often reveals itself in service — when your knowledge meets a real need.

Lessons From an Unexpected Pause

Looking back, I learned several important lessons that I apply in my life and training work:

  1. Setbacks can be catalysts.
What feels like a limitation or disruption may be the exact push you need to explore a new direction.
  2. Use downtime creatively.
Whether it’s an injury, a break, or a quiet period, uninterrupted time is a gift for reflection and creation.
  3. Focus on value, not recognition.
My first workshops weren’t for accolades — they were for impact. And that focus made the work meaningful and sustainable.
  4. Small actions lead to lasting purpose.
One month at home, one course, one workshop — it all led to a career-defining path. Don’t underestimate the power of small beginnings.

How You Can Apply This

Take a moment to reflect: have you had a situation where life slowed you down, forced you to pause, or gave you extra time?

  • Could you use that time to start a project you’ve been delaying?
  • Could you convert your skills, knowledge, or passion into something tangible that serves others?
  • Could a temporary setback actually be the doorway to discovering your purpose?

Sometimes, the obstacle isn’t in your way — it is the way.
